Snakes, public speaking, fear of heights, and fear of flying are among the top 10 fears of most Americans. Nothing is inherently wrong with being afraid of something, but then at one point or another, you have to get past through it especially if the fear is already unhealthy. When it comes to fear for flying, the first step to overcoming your fear is to control your feelings, impulses, and urges. Self-control has a direct effect in controlling whatever fears you have since it allows you to become familiar with your own thought processes and to overcome desires that in other situations would control you. Facing your smaller fears is another way to conquer your bigger fear, which is flying. Be active in dealing with your fear by actually boarding an airplane and flying somewhere close. A short trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas will help you ease the process. Have a friend or someone very close to you accompany you to the trip so that you can distract yourself while the plane is on the move. You can also bring a book by your favorite author to help you manage your fear. Finally, reward yourself for taking the first step towards conquering your fear. It will give you something to look forward to and give you the feeling of accomplishment that you definitely deserve.
